A Global Family with a 900-Year Promise: Serving Humanity Without Borders

Imagine an organisation that has stood for compassion and care for nearly a millennium — an Order whose mission began in Jerusalem in 1070 and continues today across more than 45 countries. That organisation is the Order of St John, a unique blend of history, chivalry, and humanitarian service. For over 900 years, our purpose has remained unwavering: to serve humanity without distinction of race, religion, or means.

Our motto, “Pro Fide – Pro Utilitate Hominum” (For the Faith and in the Service of Humanity), is not simply a phrase—it is the heartbeat of everything we do. While rooted in Christian principles, our work embraces inclusivity, welcoming people of all faiths and none. We believe faith can mean devotion to a higher purpose—whether spiritual or simply the selfless desire to help others. This spirit of openness and service defines our global family and sets us apart.

Chivalry Reimagined for Today

Since Queen Victoria granted our Royal Charter in 1888, the Order of St John has stood as a Royal Order of Chivalry of the British Crown, with the reigning Sovereign as its Head. But unlike any other Order, St John is also an international family of charities whose mission is clear: to lead globally in first aid and medical responses to community healthcare needs.

The early members of St John embodied values that have stood the test of time—courage, honour, and courtesy. Today, those same principles live on through acts of care and compassion in communities worldwide. Our people are found in ambulances, clinics, and classrooms, delivering life-saving skills and healthcare where it matters most. Membership in the Order is not ceremonial; it is earned through service. Every St John person shares a vocation: to care for others with respect, excellence, and empathy. This is chivalry for the modern age—practical, inclusive, and deeply human.

Our Global Reach and Impact

Today, St John operates in over 45 countries, almost all within the Commonwealth, delivering first aid and community healthcare where it is needed most. Our impact is extraordinary:

  • 2 million people trained in essential first aid skills every year.
  • 4 million individuals receive healthcare and community support annually.
  • A global team of 200,000 volunteers and 12,000 healthcare professionals working tirelessly to save lives.

From emergency ambulance services in the Solomon Islands to innovative highway emergency response solutions in Kenya, opioid poisoning response training in Canada, and dental care for underprivileged people in Hong Kong—St John adapts to local needs with creativity and care. Our interventions are locally designed and delivered, building resilience and empowering communities.

One example is our Mother & Baby Programme, which aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality across Sub-Saharan Africa. Through community-led initiatives, education, and healthcare services, this programme has reached over 200,000 mothers and families, providing vital consultations and life-saving interventions. It is a powerful demonstration of how philanthropy can transform futures—giving babies the chance to thrive and mothers the care they deserve.

Why Your Support Matters

Despite our scale and history, St John’s work depends on philanthropy. Every ambulance, every training session, every life saved is made possible by donors who share our vision of a healthier, more compassionate world. Your support enables us to innovate, expand, and reach those most in need.

By investing in St John, you are not just funding healthcare—you are sustaining a 900-year tradition of service and helping to build more resilient communities. Together, we can continue to transform lives across the globe. Whether you choose to fund a local initiative, support a global programme, or help us develop new life-saving innovations, your involvement will make a tangible difference. This is your opportunity to be part of something extraordinary—a movement that has endured for centuries and continues to change lives every day.
